Barbara Matters and her daughter Kara, hand-paint indigenous designs onto silks turning them into scarves and dresses for evening wear. The mother/ daughter duo call their silks ‘wearable art’ and trade under the name Karda Designs from their Pinjarra base in WA.
Barbara is a West Australian Aboriginal artist of Ballardong and Badimaya decent; she began painting seriously at the start of 2003. Her daughter Kara has followed in her footsteps selling her artwork to the community and having her works displayed in various galleries around the state.
In 2003 Kara won a national scholarship to travel to Canberra and work with a variety of professional artists. This trip culminated in her participation in an exhibition held at the National Gallery of Australia.
Barbara has exhibited her works at the Mandurah Art Gallery, the Accent Art Gallery in Dalkeith, the Spirit Dreaming Art Gallery in Bassendean and the Sydney Oceanic Aboriginal Trade Fair & Art Exhibition.
She is currently studying a Bachelor of Arts Degree at Edith Cowan University majoring in Australian Cultural Studies.
The ladies from Karda Designs are being mentored by Aboriginal artists Debbie Coertse from Yirra-Kurl and Teena Forrest.
